Try This

What scares you, artistically? In your notebook, make a list of the things that both attract you and scare you, whatever they are. They could be techniques, such as soldering or encaustic; or they could be challenges such as entering a juried show or building a Web site. Make several lists if you need to. Then pick one thing to tackle. Don't pick the one that seems easiest; pick the one that seems scary but also a whole lot of fun.

Lisa's Story

Lisa tells of the advice she got years ago from Eric Larson, one of the “Nine Old Men” at Disney. Tasked with making a short film to show her stuff, Lisa found herself asking how to make something new, how to shake things up and impress the big boys.

Eric said, “Do you know what makes a great animator? A great artist knows how to throw everything away. You throw away the world around you, and you even throw away who you are. The only thing that matters is the character. You have to become the character. You can't animate without being the character. If you are the character, everything falls into place.”

Lisa says, “The first time I accomplished working the way Eric told me to work, I was doing a portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt. I showed the piece at an exhibition in New England and was approached by a woman who had been working on a painting of Eleanor for several years. She asked me about nuances I had captured in my fabric sculpture that amazed her because she had never noticed those things before, even though she had studied the face for such a long time. Actually, I didn't realize I had put them there until she pointed them out. I'm not sure about this, but I think that when you become the character, as Eric described, you tap into your unconscious or subconscious mind. It is a wonderful way to work; but, of course, there are, as with everything, downsides. While I was Eleanor, I joined several political groups and civic organizations. When I was no longer Eleanor, well, Jerry was very good to go and make my apologies and erase my name from the lists. When you slip in and out of persona, it's nice to have a caretaker. Jerry is a very good one.”
